Who needs management consultants?

March 26, 2008

Who needs management consultants? We consultants have long become adept at responding to hairy old jibes such as the well-worn one that we borrow your watch in order to tell you the time. My retort to that one is “why did you ask me the time if you had a watch?” The other day I came across a particularly good definition of what a management consultant does that was new to me:

“A management consultant is someone who is paid to think for people who are too busy doing their job properly to think for themselves.”

I have been meaning to blog for some time. Last Saturday Kaye Nightingale gave a really clear explanation of the benefits and procedures involved in building and publishing a blog at a meeting of the Richmond Group. The Richmond group is the country’s leading consortium of independent management consultants or who work in small practices. The Group seeks to help its members be more successful than they otherwise would be. we have been going for over 25 years and I am their current chairman.
