Getting on – forget hard work

A YouGov survey commissioned by Right Corecare, a provider of employee assistance programmes (employer-funded access to third-party support in a variety of life’s bear traps) finds that 40% of us stay late at work. Some admitted openly that their reason for working late was impress the boss in the hope of future preferment (a much neglected word, that). I expect that many of those who gave other reasons would still expect recognition to be a secondary benefit. Unfortunately only 8% thought that long hours are rewarded by promotion in their organisation.

No surprise there. The sort boss who might equate long hours with effectiveness is likely to also be the type who will do everything they can to avoid promoting the people they think are actually doing all the work.
